20 Shadow Work Prompts for When You Feel Stuck
Twenty prompts for the days the page stays blank. Grouped by what you are avoiding: the body, other people, the past, and the parts of you that you perform around.

Some nights the page stays blank, not because there is nothing there but because the mind will not go near it. On those nights a prompt helps. It gives the avoidance a specific door to refuse, and refusal is information.
Here are twenty. They are grouped by what tends to be hiding underneath. Take one. Take the one you flinch at.
The body
- Where in my body do I feel this, and what have I been doing to not feel it?
- What am I too tired to admit I am tired of?
- When did I last feel truly at ease, and what was absent that night?
- What does my exhaustion protect me from having to face?
Other people
- What do I judge most harshly in others, and where do I do the same?
- Whose approval am I still writing my life for?
- Who do I envy, and what does the envy know that I will not say?
- What do I withhold from people, and what am I afraid would happen if I gave it?
- Where do I perform closeness instead of feeling it?
The past
- What did I decide about myself before I was old enough to argue?
- What was I told was "too much" about me, and where did I fold it away?
- What am I still apologizing for that was never mine to carry?
- What version of me did the people who raised me need, and what did that cost?
The self I perform
- What would I do if I were certain no one would ever know?
- What am I pretending not to want?
- Where does my competence hide a fear of being seen incompetent?
- What feeling do I reach for distraction to avoid?
- What would change if I stopped needing to be the reasonable one?
- What is the truest sentence I have avoided writing so far?
- If my shadow could speak in one line tonight, what would it say?
After the prompt
When you finish, do not grade the entry. Do not look for the lesson. Shadow work is not a productivity exercise, and the insight, if it comes, usually arrives days later, sideways, while you are doing something else.
Close the book. Let the ink dry. The prompt you skipped tonight will still be here. So will you.
Frequently asked
- How do I use these prompts?
- Pick one, not the whole list. Choose the prompt you least want to answer and stay with it for ten minutes. The resistance is the signal that it matters.
- What if a prompt brings up nothing?
- Move on without forcing it. Not every door opens on every night. A prompt that reads flat today can crack wide open in a month.
- Should I answer honestly even if it is unflattering?
- Especially then. Shadow work only works in private and only works honest. Nothing you write here is for display, so there is no reason to perform.
